“The world stands on three things: on Torah, on worship, and on acts of loving kindness.”

“The world survives because of three things: truth, justice, and peace.”
Both of those passages are found in Pirkei Avot, a 2000 year old compendium of wisdom from the Mishna. If there were three pillars of my early Jewish life, though, they were remembering the Holocaust, Israel’s fight for survival surrounded by hostile enemies, and the struggle to help the Jews of the Soviet Union gain the right to immigrate to the United States or Israel.
