My desire is always to write something that is simultaneously brilliant, insightful, and hysterically funny for my article for the month in which Purim occurs. Alas, I lack the creativity and the sense of humor for such an endeavor. I’ll just hope for insightful and you can decide how brilliant.

Life starts early at Shaarai Shomayim on Wednesday mornings. Every Wednesday, a small group gathers at 7:45 for a weekday morning service. Those of us who meet regularly have come to appreciate a midweek spiritual check-in, as well as each other’s company. Why would people choose to wake up early and/or get to work late? In that regard, I can only answer for myself.

On December 11, we will light the first Chanukah candle for the year. Along with all of the other joyous, calorie and cholesterol filled, and holy events of the 8 days of Chanukah, let’s reflect on the meaning of the actual word. Chanukah means “dedication.” In that spirit, here are some things I hope we will all dedicate ourselves to this month, and throughout the year. Here are eight suggestions for 8 days.

In just a few days, about a dozen of us will be leaving for Toronto, Ontario to join with hundreds of other Reform Jews from all over North America. We will gather as part of the conventions of the Union for Reform Judaism and the Women of Reform Judaism.
